Linux Basic


Linux basic distributions are organized into sections by the major distribution they are based on, or the package management system they are based around.

Linux major distribution:
  1. Debian based: based on it use the .deb package format and the dpkg package manager.
    • Debian based : Damn Small Linux, Dreamlinux, Knoppix, Linspire, MEPIS, Ubuntu, Xandros Open Circulation Edition.
    • Knoppix based : Feather Linux, Kaella, Morphix, Musix, PHLAK
    • Ubuntu based : Ubuntu
      • official distributions : Ubuntu Server Edition, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Edubuntu Gobuntu, Ubuntu JeOS, Ubuntu Mobile, Ubuntu Netbook Edition
      • contributed distributions : Ubuntu Studio, Mythbuntu

  2. Gentoo based: based on Gentoo use the Portage package management system with emerge or one of the alternative package managers.
    • Gentoo based : Calculate Linux, Gentoox, iloog, Knopperdisk, Kororaa, Litrix, Nova, Pentoo, Sabayon, Linux SystemRescueCD, Tin Hat Linux, Ututo, VidaLinux.

  3. Pacman based: a package manager that is capable of resolving dependencies and automatically downloading and installing all necessary packages. In theory, a user need only run a single command to completely update the system.
    • Pacman based : Arch Linux, DeLi Linux, Frugalware.

  4. RPM based: the original major distributions that used the RPM file format, which is today used in several package management systems.
    • RPM based: Caldera OpenLinux, Fedora, Mandriva Linux, Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, Turbolinux, Vine Linux, YOPER.
    • Fedora based: Berry Linux, EduLinux, K12LTSP, Linpus Linux, Ojuba Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
      • Red Hat Enterprise Linux based : Asianux, CentOS, ClearOS, Fermi Linux LTS, Miracle Linux, Oracle Enterprise Linux, IGOS Nusantara.
    • Mandriva Linux based: Annvix, MCNLive, PCLinuxOS.
      • PCLinuxOS based: Karoshi

  5. Slackware based: a highly customizable distribution that stresses ease of maintenance and reliability over cutting-edge software and automated tools. Generally considered a distribution for advanced users, it is often suggested to those who want to learn the inner workings of a Linux operating system.
    • Slackware based : BasicLinux, Slackintosh, SLAX, Topologilinux, VectorLinux, Wolvix, Zenwalk, ZipSlack.
    • Slax based: Emnix, DAVIX, DNALinux.
