Extreme Makeover Home Edition

Extreme Makeover Home EditionExtreme Makeover: Home Edition premiered as a thirteen-part special on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, and had its official series premiere on Sunday February 15, 2004. It is currently one of ABC's top-rated series and has become far more popular than the original Extreme Makeover, which struggled in the ratings through its last two seasons and quietly ended with its episodes burned off wholesale in July 2007.
The show ranked 41st in its first season, averaging 10.6 million viewers per episode, with the pilot episode bringing in 12 million viewers. However its ratings soared thereafter with the second season entering the top 20, finishing 15th for the year, averaging 15.8 million viewers per episode. The next four seasons each ranked at least in the top 30, with seasons two and three ranking in the top 20, and seasons four and five ranking in the top 25.

The sixth season, however, fell out of the top 35, and ranked only 38th, hitting an all-time low of only 10.3 million viewers per episode. The seventh season, continued to fall in the ratings, ranking 39th, hitting a new low of 9.1 million viewers. Series reruns began airing on TV Land on Tuesday August 7, 2007, making it the youngest non-original show to air on the network. The show is also in syndication on CMT.

The show is hosted by Ty Pennington, formerly a carpenter on the show Trading Spaces. The series is devoted to rebuilding families' homes when the family is in need of new hope.

During the 2005–2006 season, the show went to areas hit by Hurricane Katrina and helped communities to rebuild themselves with help from other organizations.

The show also had a series of specials that later became a regular series during the 2004–2005 television season entitled Extreme Makeover Home Edition: How’d They Do That? It was a short-lived spin-off of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition that featured extra behind-the-scenes footage of what had happened in that week's episode. An occasional special would feature The Muppets, property of ABC, engage in comical scenes with the design team. However, their scenes are usually filmed after the renovation.

The show has been renewed by ABC for the 2010–2011 television season, and there are plans to begin broadcasting the show in HD at some point.

Tonight on Extreme Makeover Home Edition the design team travels to Witchita, Kansas to do a rebuild for the Hall family, who had been forced to relocate when dad, Carl, was paralyzed in an accident and could no longer navigate their home safely or effectively. Keep reading for all the highlights, including appearances by baseball star Derek Jeter, and the Atlanta Braves…

Ty Pennington and the design team take the Extreme Makeover Home Edition bus to Witchita, Kansas to meet the Hall family. On the way they learn that Stacy and Carl were high school sweethearts, and that Carl used to play baseball for Witchita State. The pair married and had four children, but Carl became paralyzed from the mid-shoulders down in an car accident, which changed their whole lives. Carl continued to pursue his love of sports by coaching, and the family moved to a rented condo because Carl couldn’t navigate their bi-level home.

Ty and the team go to the indoor baseball facility at Witchita State University to surprise the family. Carl is there giving a talk to the ball team when Ty hollers into the megaphone, “Good morning Hall family!” Ty introduces Bob Cook from Bob Cook Homes, who will be in charge of the project.

The Halls and the design team go to their current home to learn about the challenges Carl faces each day. The younger son and daughter share a room and both love sports. The two older daughters share another room and love fashion. Carl shows Ty some newspaper clippings and talks about how much he admires Derek Jeter. Stacy tells Ty how their lives changed in an instant and she does the best she can to cope – failure is not an option.

The Halls are sent to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The project gets underway on a plot of donated land. Paul plans a sports-themed bedroom with lockers for son, Logan. Paige is planning a city/loft room for daughter, Megan. Her friends help out.

Finally it’s time for the Hall family to see their new home. The crowd shouts for the driver to ‘move that bus’ and the Halls react emotionally to the sight of their accessible house. They thank Bob Cook and his crew and head inside.

The Halls are impressed with the beautiful decor and open spaces. Carl realizes he will be much more independent in the house. Paige tells them that CVS Pharmacy has equipped the house with high-tech voice-activation controls for Carl as well as an elevator. The kids check out their rooms and love them. Carl and Stacy view their master bedroom, which brings Stacy to tears. Paul appears to show them the track which will take Paul from the bedroom to the washroom and shower.
