grandstand collapses in brazil

Video footage shows the metal stand crumpling in less than a second at the race in the southern state of Parana in Brazil. The temporary structure had been erected ready for people to watch a car race in the southern Brazilian city of Quatro Pontes.

More than 100 people have been injured - 22 critically - after a grandstand collapsed during a car race. Authorities say around 200 people were watching the race in Parana state when the structure suddenly fell apart.

Six people were rushed to a hospital in a neighboring city and two are still in hospital in serious condition. It has been reported that firemen at the scene said the company that organized the event had failed to call them to inspect the installation before the event.

However, some experts suggest the most likely cause is simply too many people in the stand at the same time. The city’s authorities are investigating the causes of the accident.

Brazil's TV Taroba showed the footage and the chaos that followed, with the injured being treated at the scene.

It is thought at least 500 people were sitting on the stands when the accident happened.
