jewel eyes implantation

jewel eyesThis platinum eye jewel (available in several styles) is inserted under the cornea. In case that description alone doesn’t give you the willies, or perhaps gen-gap you into a drinking binge, there is also the 500 Euro price tag to take into account.

This may sound like an impossible and even crazy procedure but since its creation in 2002, folks in the Netherlands are as used to the Jewel Eye look as we are to the most outrageous piercings and tattoos here in the U.S. Eric Klarenbeek has designed a series of eye jewels that attach to contact lenses, trailing down the face like tears.

This procedure was developed by the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery as a new way to make a statement when it comes to wearing jewelry. With tattoos, earrings and other types of piercings as popular ways to decorate the body and face, these doctors decided the Jewel Eye look would be the next generation in body cosmetics.

Jewel Eye (or “JewelEye” in the Netherlands) is exactly how it sounds. The surgical technique involves placing a tiny jewel design (about 3.5 mm) underneath a transparent layer of the eye, known as the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the delicate membrane that covers the front of the eyeball and lines the inside of the eyelids.

The jewel designs come in a number of glittery shapes: four-leaf clover, musical note, star, and hearts are the most popular. There is even a way to customize your own shape upon request.

In order to have a Jewel Eye done, the eye is first anesthetized with eye-drop anesthesia medication and is decontaminated to prevent bacterial infection. Using an injection of a special balanced salt solution (BSS), a small sac is created in the conjunctiva of the eye. This sac is medically known as a “bleb.” Special scissors are then used to open the bleb, where a superficial tunnel is made. The tunnel is measured to fit the proportions of the jewel design and once everything is in place, the implant is inserted into the tunnel where it stays inside of the bleb. After cleaning the area and removing excess BSS, antibiotic drops are applied to the treated eye. Post treatment after the Jewel Eye procedure includes antibiotic eye drops for 2 weeks and a follow up after one year.

The Jewel Eye, which Netherlands doctors refer to as an “Cosmetic Extraocular Implant”, can be performed by any registered ophthalmologist at designation clinics in the Netherlands area. The entire process takes about 15 minutes and ranges in price from $600-$1,200. So far this trend has gained immense popularity in the Netherlands, with a long waiting list of patients. Doctors and patients alike have been so pleased with the results and lack of side effects that this practice is starting to spread to nearby areas. Of course some in the ophthalmology field are skeptical of this practice, but for now the demand for Jewel Eyes continues. No one knows if this trend will hit America but many suspect it is just a matter of time before this innovative jewel design hits close to home.
