A plane has crashed today on the Emirates highway and crew dead in UPS plane crash in Dubai. Plane goes down and bursts into flames after take-off in uninhabited area missing two major highways.
The plane has crashed at approximately 8 m local time while it was heading to the UPS depot in Cologne, Germany.
The plane was UPS flight 6 from OMDB/DXB Dubai to EDDN/CGN. The registration number is N571UP, a Boeing 747-44AF/SCD variant.
According to witnesses, the UPS plane crashed down near Academic City & Global Village on the Al-Ain Dubai Highway, 20 kilometers away from Dubai’s International Airport, 2 minutes after taking off.
UPS’ airline and international operations manager Bob Lekites said in a statement:
“This incident is very unfortunate and we will do everything we can to find the cause. Our thoughts go out to the crew members involved in the incident and their families.”
Al Arabiya spoke to an official and learnt that the plane was attempting to land on the airport when it suffered technical problems that led to the plane crash, contrary to main reports that say it was heading for Germany. Local media added that the plane caught fire while pilots were attempting to land it.
They managed to avoid residential areas after their aircraft developed engine trouble.
Two minutes after the plane took off from the Dubai International Airport for Cologne in Germany, the plane developed an onboard crisis, and came down in a ball of fire near the Nad Al Sheba Military Camp close to Global Village.
Both pilots died and their bodies have been recovered, according to police sources. According to some eyewitness reports, the Jumbo jet streaking flames roared over the Emirates Road setting some cars on fire, but there is no report of any injuries on the ground.
Residents in the area are reporting via social networking sites that they saw the plane very near and the crash was followed by a lot of fire and smoke.
It is too early to even hazard a guess about what happened in the 120 seconds after the takeoff, but one can record that the pilots whose names have not been disclosed showed great presence of mind in avoiding inhabited parts of Dubai, losing their lives in the process.
The scenario otherwise would have been harrowing. Deputy Director of Dubai Civil Defence, Col Ahmed Al Sayegh, said the rescue team is yet to find the Flight Recorder and the Cockpit Voice Recorder, the two pieces of key evidence in orange glow steel reinforced boxes that record the parameters of the flight up to the very last second as well as all conversation on the flight deck with ground control and the pilots among themselves through four cockpit microphones.
