Heather WIlliams, the first assistant federal public defender in Arizona has suggested that San Diego attorney Judy Clarke should be appointed the defense attorney for Jared Lee Loughner. The 22-year-old man that is being charged with the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Clarke, is a former federal public defender in San Diego and Spokane. She served on the teams that defended Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh; Susan Smith, a South Carolina woman who drowned her sons in a car in 1994; and Ted Unabomber Kaczynski.
She is considered by her peers as the best federal public defender in the U.S. The Arizona Republic said Clarke will be by Loughner's side when he is formally charged on Monday.The San Diego based public defender has had her share of tricky and heartbreaking cases. In her career Judy Clarke has helped defend such notorious criminals as the ” Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, Olympics bomber Eric Rudolph and demented South Carolina mom Susan Smith, who drowned her two sons in 1994.” Yup, she’s gotten around. And now it looks like she is all set to defend Jared Lee Loughner, the man accused of being solely responsible for the Arizona shootings.
Why would she defend people who have done such horrific acts?
According to reports, she is a staunch opponent of the death penalty and defends these criminals not to get them “off” but to ensure that they do not get a death sentence. A colleague told the AP that she, She, ” just doesn’t believe in the death penalty, so she does everything she can to keep that from happening.”
